Why Alpacas?

I am sure that every Alpaca owner has a good story as to how they got involved with Alpacas. Ours was a path more than a story. Being in travel for over 15 years, I was looking around for a way out of the sad state of travel affairs after 9/11. We also have a 29 year old horse who as he gets older gets more lonely for companionship. I started thinking one day about finding a friend for our horse - thinking of things like goats or large dogs. Someone said to me "how about Alpacas?" and I promptly said "WHAT is an Alpaca?"

After months of research both on the web and in our local library, I came to realize that Alpacas sounded like very interesting creatures! Everything I read about them was positive and the people who owned them and raised them sounded like the happiest people on earth! When my husband read the part about the financial rewards and tax benefits of raising Alpacas - we put our research in full gear.

ranch Visiting our local Alpaca ranches we were amazed at the wonderful peaceful world that surrounded the Alpacas and their owners. Not that there was no work involved but it was all very pleasant and the people were all so happy. Being an animal lover all my life and having 7 rescue dogs just made me jump for joy thinking about adding the gentle, mystical creatures to our family.

Alpacas I learned are not only used for their fleece which is shorn once a year, but they are also trainable! You can have Alpacas that you breed for purposes of breeding better animals and sell (that is where the big bucks come in), Alpacas that you breed mainly for their fleece, and then even Pet Alpacas whose fleece may not be the best but they are Lovely companions (as long as you have more than 3 or 4 of them around as they are herd animals). One of my pet quality alpacas just tied for 1st place in the Alpaca Fest West Agility competition and boy did I have fun!

animal I have met so many people who just fall in love with these creatures and many of us who when we want to get away from the hub-bub of life, we just go out and spend time with our Alpaca friends (I mean the furry ones!). When you do, you can just feel all your worries melt away. My husband swears that they were a gift from the Aliens who landed in the plains of Peru. They sure look other worldly but you know............maybe he's not so far off because............Alpacas seem to be giving a lot of people I know a gift of inner peace and love. Just give their super soft bodies a hug and look into those big black eyes and see what YOU think!
